CYCLING IN THE WORLD'S MOST POPULAR CYCLING AREA
The French Alps are dazzlingly beautiful. Unspoiled nature at its best: think colorful alpine meadows, impressive rock formations and views of the eternal snow from the very highest peaks. It is a privilege when you get to drive up among all this beauty. In general, the roads on these cols (due in part to the Tour de France) are of fine quality. The asphalt is fine and often better than the cols in the Pyrenees or in Italy.
The Alps are very vast in France. The most famous cols are against the southern side of the Alps, think of mountain roads like the Galibier that literally connects north and south or the Izoard that is in really in the southern French Alps. We would be selling the Alps short by looking only at its most famous cols and climbs. Besides the Alpe d'huez there is so much more, and secretly perhaps more beautiful, but during drinks talk you will impress a lot less with a Col de Granon.
In the Alps, the season for cyclists is theoretically open from the moment the first cols are cleared of snow. Usually around the beginning of May. After that, the cols close at the first real snowfall, usually towards the end of October. However, cold already makes cycling from late September a lot less enjoyable, and heavy snowfall on the highest cols is also quite possible in June.
