The island of Sardinia lies directly south of the island of Corsica, west of the Boot of Italy, and north of Tunisia. At 24,090 km², it is the second largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily. It has about 1.65 million inhabitants. The capital of Sardinia is Cagliari, which lies in the south of the island. Other important towns on the island are Sassari, Nuoro, Olbia and Oristano. The main ports are Porto Torres, Olbia, Golfo Aranci, Arbatax, Porto Foxi and Cagliari. Sardinia is an autonomous region within the Italian Republic.
