Balearic Islands
The Balearic Islands include four main islands with permanent habitation: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza (Catalan: Eivissa) and Formentera.
Other smaller islands include Cabrera, which houses Archipiélago de Cabrera National Park, Espalmador, Aire and Dragonera.
The westernmost Balearic Islands, including Ibiza and Formentera, are collectively called the Pitiusen or Pine Islands.
The eastern Balearic Islands, including Mallorca and Menorca, are collectively called the Gymneses.
In the Balearic Islands, Catalan and Spanish are spoken by permanent residents. Catalan is of a different variety than that of Barcelona, for example, and is known among linguists as Balearic.
However, Balearic is itself divided into several island-specific dialects, and the islands' residents will therefore use their own local names, such as "Mallorquí" on Mallorca, "Eivissenc" on Ibiza and "Menorquí" on Menorca. Some 70% of Balearic residents claim to be able to speak Catalan, however, this includes Catalan as spoken on the mainland.
Cycling in the Balearic Islands
The islands are excellent for cycling, with Mallorca and Ibiza standing out in terms of diversity.
The smaller islands like Menorca and Formentera are very easy to make day trips with a boat trip included.
