For the big day, the cyclosportive de la Madeleine on Sunday, August 6, there is a choice of 4 distances. So there are also shorter distances to ride. And there is nothing at all wrong with riding any of these distances. Everyone is welcome.
La Madeleine: a top day in a snake pit
Anyone who followed this year's Tour de France can recall the images of the enchanting Lacets de Montvernier. No fewer than 18 hairpin turns in just under 3 kilometers where both the road and the peloton snaked uphill like a snake. Not only the road to Montvernier winds up that way. In the Maurienne Valley, all the roads everywhere wind up the mountains left and right that way. Where the Marmotte actually leaves them all left and right, the cyclo La Madeleine picks up as many of those climbs as possible.
The cyclosportive de la Madeleine; Up and down
On Sunday, August 6, we set off from La Chambre (valley) with over 500 men and women at the start of the 135, 115 or 60 kilometer ride up and down the serpentine roads from the valley. From the start it is a few kilometers through the valley to the Col du Mollard, 18 kilometers at an average of 6% with 45 hairpins in the first 12 kilometers. A brilliant start to the day! A small descent follows to make the connection to the last part of the Col de Croix de Fer. The last part of this Anaconda of a climb is still 14 kilometers long at an average of 6.5%. The first 8 kilometers of it barely exceed 4%. From the village of Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves, however, the last 6 kilometers pull the average back up considerably by barely dropping below 8.5%. However, the views between the mountains these last kilometers are phenomenal. And -for those who still have an eye for it- the mineral-soaked rock face is also stunning. It turns shimmering green in the sunlight.
Beautiful surroundings
At the summit of the Croix de Fer we crossed over to the top of the Glandon to crash down in a long line. There won't be a peloton here for a long time so loners or just small groups made their way down as quickly as possible. Once at the bottom, the 135 and 115 distance split up. The longest distance goes up the Col de Chaussy via the Lacets de Montvernier. A total of 14 kilometers of winding uphill at an average of 7%. Known from the last Tour de France! Yes, it's climb you want to have done, but you're not going to see it as beautiful as the helicopter shots. By the way, for the shortest distance this is the first climb of the day, the middle distance just skips it. However, all distances eventually descend to La Chambre to conquer the namesake of the cyclo: the Madeleine.
The Madeleine, the beast
A formidable climb of just under 20 kilometers at 7.5% average. So in total, the 135 kilometers account for over 4700 altimeters (the 115 almost 3800 and the 60 almost 2700). That the altimeters don't just snake around, but also do their work that way is immediately clear in the first kilometers. Just as strangling snakes slowly but surely drain the energy from your body, so does the energy from the legs of many of the athletes. Swaying along the road, panting heavily, standing still next to the bike and even on foot, they go uphill. Only a few are really still moving fast. At the top awaits the redemptive finish and a magnificent view! You have done a great job!
Note! French cyclosportives have the legal requirement of a medical certificate or license. All information about this granfondo can be found at CycloWorld. It is possible to work directly with partner ANCORA Health schedule an appointment for medical certification.
